Not sure if this is an attack?

Hello all. I was not sure where to find an answer, and I’m hoping I can find one here.

I was diagnosed with MS about a year ago. My symptoms were fatigue, and numbness of the waistline and right hand. I’ve been on betaseron since september and have not had any other attacks.

Almost a month ago, I took my daily shot on my right thigh like any other dose and did not have any problems. A few days after, I felt a sort of itch roughly where I took the medication, but did not think much of it. Afterwards it became a "pinching" pain which was so bad it affected my sleep.

Since then, it was minimized, but I am still experiencing some pain, and numbness (particularly in the morning). Both my MS specialist and my family doctor have ruled out attacks, and seem to think it’s related to the shot I took before it started. Both thought I may have hit a tendon or something.

There are no visible marks, discolorations, or anything that would indicate anything wrong with my leg. I have avoided taking the medication in that spot, but as this is now the fourth week, I am starting to get really scared and am tired of having my doctors downplay it as nothing.

If anyone has any advice, or could at least explain a similar situation I would really appreciate it.

Hello there

I take Betafearon (as its called over here). I have also had injection site reactions. I have had MS five years and generally what I have found is that you may find some part of your body more sensitive or more reactive than other parts. This may be what is happening to you. For example I got red marks an itchiness when I injected in my thighs so I don’t do it there anymore. However I get much less irritation in other parts of my body. You may find that it is trial and error and you may find other areas you can inject where you do not get this reaction. i don’t think it is a flare up but a reaction at the injection site which is certainly not uncommon.

All the best.

I have been injecting myself for a few years now, im getting terrible marks.... the bad ones have been in my thighs and like you just said, you avoiding your thighs, i cant really do that, im running out of spots.... so can someone suggest somewhere else to inject???

Perfect solution would be to have another body, but i only have one... if that were the case, id order new legs too... : >
Jokes aside, cant do the arms, thats to painful, the thighs leave terrible marks, that i need to take antibiotics for...

Really getting me down...

Hi,
I had the same thing happen to me quite a few times after injecting into my right hip. Both my GP and MS Nurse said that i had most likely hit a nerve on that side. The pain was so bad, causing numbness. i could not put my right leg down to the floor, which really affected my walking. It took about three days before things got back to normal. It’s so easy to hit a nerve or tendon in some area’s of your body. I try to avoid this spot now if I can.

Just as an update. I was eventually sent to a specialist, who deemed my problems to be a damaged nerve that will just eventually die. I do not know if that sounds correct, and was told nothing could be done, so I’ve just been living with it. It actually is a lot better now, with minimal discomfort. I’ve even been injecting in the location where I had the issue. The specialist said it was unrelated to MS, and could’ve been caused by something as simple as a tight belt. I see that with sceptism, but what can you do.
